Lot 50 – Green Sequined Mermaid Gown
The designer of this stunning gown that resembles a mermaid’s tail was the late Catherine Walker. It has more than a touch of Hollywood glamour to it, depending on the light where it's photographed it can vary anywhere from a teal to aqua to emerald green.
It raised just over $24,000 in the Christie’s auction, and was in the collection of the lady from Florida who purchased 14 gowns. These were subsequently resold at auction in 2013, where this gown raised £90,000.
It’s on the list of hard to make in miniature due to the fabric, however replica makers have coped in different way, ranging from using a cheaper green confetti dot stretchy fabric to lame to actually hand applying thousands of sequins as did Catherine Walker’s associate.
The gown comprises a long sleeved column shape, slightly gathered in ruching running down the front from the neckline to the very high slit that runs to the floor. The sleeves have a touch of 80s puff to them, but not hugely dominating or detracting from the column line. The neckline has an unusual feature of upside-down vaulted arch shape to it, which is a nice change from all the v-necks and jewel necks, making a perfect frame for a good necklace.
Diana accessorized it differently as was her habit. In the early years, her go-to neckpiece was the Prince of Wales feathers pendant hung on a diamond necklace and including the gorgeously matching emerald teardrop pendant. but later this was switched to the Cambridge emerald and diamond choker. Both necklaces were worn with Diana’s pear-drop emerald and diamond earrings, a wedding present from Charles. She paired it with matching satin bag and shoes.
This gown appears to be nearly top choice to copy with 11 replicas I’ve been able to find. (I must admit, there are a few names missing from this list that surprise me.) Replicas from top left by Betty Herr, Hisodoll, mini-mary, Jane Mahlig Hornung, Alana Bennett, Bea Doll Boutique, Betsy O’Donnell, Mariana (France), Tommie Peacock, eBay seller Maganda7, the late Joyce Stuchl, the late Axelle Marion.
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I would be happiest to see it include:
1. Gown
2. Emerald choker
3. Prince of Wales feather necklace with emerald pendant
4. Green satin shoes
5. Matching clutch bag
6. Emerald drop earrings
