This gorgeous strapless taffeta evening gown designed by Catherine Walker is a sari-wrap style gown in blush pink silk taffeta printed with royal blue roses, and often called the “Bois de Rose” gown. Very memorable photos of Diana and Charles dancing in Australia show the fabulous design and the sexy side slit at its best (right). It sold at the Christie’s auction for more than $50,000. She wore the Saudi sapphire pendant she had received as a wedding gift, as well as the matching bracelet and crescent drop sapphire earrings, her sapphire engagement ring, silver shoes and her hair up secured with a jewelled star.
It was also worn to a performance when, except for substitution of the Omani swish sapphire choker, it was accessorised in a similar way. On a third occasion, Diana added her signature sapphire and pearl 7-strand choker.
It has been copied many times, once the Diana sewing brigade either found a suitable fabric or made their own.
Replicas from left: Sweet Creations, Bea Doll Boutique, miricreations, PrincessHike, an unnamed eBay seller, Axelle Marion and the late Ann Sago. (Ann made her own fabric by first dyeing fabric to a blush pink, then stamping “roses” onto it using a pencil eraser.)
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I would love to see it include:
1. Gown
2. Silver shoes
3. Silver clutch bag
4. Sapphire pendant necklace
5. Sapphire cluster bracelet
6. Double drop sapphire cluster earrings
7. Sheer nude hose
Why the pendant necklace instead of the swish or the sapphire/pearl cluster? Because this piece wasn't represented in the regular collection, nor were the earrings that accompanied it. The pearl version was available on the divorce dress LE/Travolta dressed doll 1, and the swish with the Travolta ensemble. The double drop earrings also came only on the Travolta dressed doll, so putting them together with an outfit would have been a cool incentive for customers to buy.
