I’m torn on this one. In some ways, this starts out as a simple, classy look in a simple classic monochrome, but I have certain reservations about it. It has the feel of an air hostess uniform for a Middle Eastern airline.
It is modest to the point of absolutely no sex appeal, no royal business savvy and no real fashion sense, other than the attempt at breaking up the white with the tight scarf and the black embellishment on the hat. The skirt is overly long, the tunic jacket is nearly a dress on its own
Tell me. Am I being harsh? Can't you just see Diana gesturing at the exit doors?
I had a difficult time identifying events and time period, but after a lot of searching, I found this was worn on an official visit with Charles to Portugal in 1987. Here are some comparison shots of it.
The hat is a little more interesting once the left side is seen and the oddly dischordant bow is revealed. It's not that I don't like the bow, it just feels a little too playful and fun for this very all business and no party ensemble.
This doesn't seem like too hard an outfit to produce, the most difficult item being the hat. The outfit itself is a somewhat baggy and long white jacket over a somewhat baggy and long white pleated skirt and accented with a blue-black silk scarf wrapped and tied around the neck—I suspect this to be a retasked pussybow from a navy blouse; in other photos of Diana, the blouse cuffs can be seen peeking out at her wrists (they aren't on the jacket.)
The replica is by mini-mary. I haven’t been able to find many replicas, probably due to the combined obscurity and unusual unattractiveness of Diana’s outfit on this occasion. Mary did a nice job of an oddly frumpy ensemble. That said, I wouldn't say no.
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I'd like to see it include:
1. Dress
2. Hat
3. Black scarf
4. White shoes
5. Black & white clutch bag
6. Sapphire/diamond cluster earrings
