I’m a sucker for a green outfit. This one was worn to Royal Ascot in 1986 and comprises a kelly green, irregular polka dotted and black-belted blouse with a black pussybow over a matching, solid green, A-line skirt in a modest below the knee length. Unfortunately, the wind that day was not Diana’s friend and the skirt clung in a moulded way to her legs and nearly ripped the matching wide-brimmed hat from her head. She took it very good-naturedly and smiled, but took the unusual step of removing her hat.
The suit is by Victor Edelstein and the hat likely by Philip Somerville. The fabric on close-ups shows to have a bit of a texture to it or a kind of subtle print.
The outfit was later spotted on her sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale a few years later, and it was much more flattering on Lady Sarah than Diana. My guess is that this was Sarah's dress and Diana borrowed it, so not just a one-off wonder, it was a "my sister's closet" outfit.
