The Catherine Walker creation in fuchsia pink silk and purple silk chiffon that came to be known as the “Thai” gown, was featured on a porcelain Franklin Mint doll, the “Princess of Culture.” (see last photo left.)
The gown itself is a bit of an engineering marvel, and is essentially a strapless, ruched and tightly fitted gown with a swathe of purple chiffon creating the illusion of a stole/sash thrown across the shoulder. There is little I would change from the porcelain version, just the addition of the bracelets worn, double string pearls on the left and a gold bangle on the right.
Most of this outfit is already achievable by swapping round items from the FM porcelain and vinyl collections, but I do love to see the original copies from non-FM sources. FM did neglect an integral part of the outfit by leaving off the orchid hair ornament, however a few silk petals can be folded together, a couple of tack stitches to hold the shape, then secured with a Barbie bobbie pin or map pin.
The porcelain doll gown is lovely and can either easily be altered to fit the vinyl doll, however at least two replica makers on eBay have attempted it and done a fine job. The top doll photo is by mini-mary and below is Hisodoll's (who has sadly left the Diana sewing fray for American Girl.)
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I would be happy to see it include:
1. Gown
2. Pink shoes
3. White bouquet
4. Pearl drop earrings
5. Silk orchid hair ornament
6. Gold bangle bracelet
7. Pearl bracelet
