Flora

Any terrestrial or aquatic area may have a large number of plants which could be classified as 'wild plants' and 'cultivated plants'. The total plant wealth present in any area is referred to as the 'flora' of that area. So, often deserts have few species and it is said that the deserts have poor flora. Similarly, rainforests have a large number of species in a small area and it is said that the rain forests have rich flora. Here the term flora starts with 'f' (lower case), while the word 'Flora' which starts with 'F' (upper case) indicates a systematically documented list of plants and their description. The term 'flora' is commonly used for total plant species in the area while the term 'Flora' is used for a scientific, often printed, document.

In eflorapantnagar flora is displayed under two categories- 'wild flora' and 'cultivated flora' on family pages.

Wild Flora: All the plants growing in an area naturally without any human efforts constitute wild flora. On family pages these species are shown first.  In majority of the Floras only wild plants are included.

Pantnagar area is expected to have about five hundred wild plant species.

Cultivated Flora:  Man need plants for various purposes- food, medicine, beautification, shelter, wood, spices etc and cultivate them. All the plants cultivated in an area constitute 'Cultivated Flora'. On family pages these plant species are shown after wild flora.

Pantnagar area is expected to have more than five hundred cultivated plant species.

Sometimes few wild species are also cultivated in gardens or conservatories for their utilities (medicinal/ botanical curiosity etc). These species may be shown either under wild flora or under cultivated flora. Contrary to this, some of the cultivated species may escape from cultivation and can establish themselves among wild species successfully. They multiply freely in the area and constitute the naturalized species in the flora. These species are either shown in wild flora, or cultivated flora, or rarely in both.

The flora of Pantnagar area is rich (species-wise), though a large number of the species are weedy indicating a high disturbance in this habitat. eflorapantnagr does not boast a display of all wild species or cultivated species, but majority of them are included and remaining species are being included gradually.
