Salient Features
The members are mainly succulent shrubs or herbs, rarely small trees.
Leaves simple, usually entire, in spirals (making rosettes), or opposite, or whorled.
Flowers solitary or in terminal thyrse, usually bisexual, pentamerous, hypogynous or weakly perigynous.
Calyx distinct, corolla of free or tube forming connate petal.
Stamens usually twice the number of petals, in 2 whorls, less often same number as petals, alternating with them, rarely basally connate.
Gynoecium of carpels as many as sepals, usually free, with nectariferous appendage near base, ovules 1- many in each carpel, in basal or marginal placentation
Fruit a head of follicles, nut like or capsules.
