Characteristic Features:

Plants dioecious, perennial with rhizomatous or short palm-like unbranched stem.

Leaves large, pinnately compound, born in apical crown, leaflets with several parallel veins but no distinct mid-vein.

Microsporophylls compact in strobilus, each containing numerous microsporangia on abaxial surface.

Megasporophylls reduced, peltate, each bearing 2 ovules on adaxial side

Seeds large, often brightly coloured, fleshy.
