Characteristic Features:

Trees, shrubs and lianas
Inflorescence cymose, bearing small, greenish flowers
Ovary usually surrounded by nectary disc situated inside the point of stamen attachment and often adnate to the stamens
Ovary has two ovules in each locule, seeds with bright coloured aril
