Lianas (rarely herbs or pachycauls)
Stem with leaf opposed tendrils
Leaves simple, pinnate or palmate
Flowers small, with valvate, apopetalous or calyptrate corolla, stamens 4 or 5, antipetalous
Ovary superior to half inferior and has lobed or discoid nectary at apex
Fruit a berry
