Monoecious or dioecious herbs, shrubs, trees or lianas with calcium carbonate cystoliths and some with stinging trichomes
Flowers small, wind pollinated, uniseriate, with accrescent perianth
Stamens with straight or inflexed, pollen catapulting filaments
Female flowers with monocarpellary unilocular ovary having single, basal, orthotropous ovule
Fruit an achene, nut or drupe
