Artist Inspired

Artist Inspired project was a project based on looking at what other artists and art movements created and then turning those ideas into a new piece of art with our artist views. My artist was Faith Ringgold, she is an artist, painter, she is most famous for her narrative quilts which address current things that affect African Americans in today's world. The art movement that Ringgold fits into is Contemporary Narrative Art. Which is art created by someone who is alive at the moment, and the art tells a story. For this project we had to choose either our art movement or artist and pair it with another.

I chose to keep the idea of narrative art, but change my artist to Jasper Johns, an American artist, his work is associated with abstract impressionism and pop art. Johns paints a lot of things like targets, letter, and numbers. He paints with big brush strokes and lots of colors, the colors upon different colors are what creates his numbers and letters. I wanted my art to address something that is happening today I also wanted it to have to do with animals. So I chose the issue of rhino poaching. At first I wasn't sure how I wanted this work to look or have an affect, but after some thinking and a lot of changing ideas I landed on Jasper Johns target in the background. In the beginning I wasn't sure how I was going to get everything to fit so I used Faith Ringgold's idea of piecing things together, so almost like a quilt I cut out the rhino and began to add to the background with acrylic paint. Once the background was complete I lade the rhino over in the place I wanted it and cover the whole project with Acrylic Gloss Medium, to connect everything.

I did this project with acrylic paint and charcoal, the background is done with acrylic and was inspired by Jasper Johns. I used his idea of the target to address animal poaching and his way of painting numbers and letter to show the amount of rhinos left in the world today. Overall I like the the way this project turned out, after restarting and changing ideas at least 4 times it is nice to end with someone that somewhat resembles the idea I had in my head.
