Movement in 3D Art

For this project we had to look at the work of Alexander Calder, a well know sculptor who works with the idea of movement in his art. We started by looking a t video highlighting some of Calders work. The video examined the work of Alexander Calder, a sculptor best known for his fascinating movable pieces of work. In the video it travels through a museum talking about different aspects of his work and why it is special. I really enjoyed this video because it didn't just focus on one aspect of his work, it moved from piece to piece and looked at how his work evolved and adapted over time. This video was interesting because it was someone and a type of art I hadn't really ever looked at but the video walked me through everything. I really liked the work that he did with wire, my favorite being, the Circus Scene done in 1929. I liked this piece because it was so detailed with all the movements and everything that is going on yet so abstract in how it is looked at. The lack of detail makes everything seem whimsical and free, but the structure of the people holds it all together and keeps it from being totally abstract. I liked how the wire gave it a structure without too much detail, I also liked some of his mobiles. For my project I wanted to combine both of those things.

I began my project by thinking of ways I could make a wire mobile, after thinking it over I realized I couldn't figure out a way to make the just the wire super interesting so I decided to use old egg shells to help add something to my mobile. I started this project by figuring out how I was going to attach the egg shells to the wire mobile, I did this by poking holes in the top of the eggs. Then I began by twisting the wire together to start to play around with the thickness of the wire just like Calder did, I did this for the rim of the mobile and then left the strings down to the egg shells thin. Once I had the rim done I began to add the egg shells, once this was done I hung it up, I wanted it to be able to move in the wind so I fixed the top part so its lose, this makes it so that in the wind can move the mobile but because the strips to the egg shells are wire so when the wind blows the mobile moves either clockwise or counterclockwise rather than the long wires with the eggs moving.

I thought this project was pretty fun and interesting. I liked the way we had to do same research about the person first and work of there inspiration. If I were to do this project again I would look to do more with the wire and look the circus piece again and go more off of that instead of his mobiles. But overall I liked this project and what I have created relating to it.
