Sustained Investigation #12

Childhood Flowers

6x6

Pencil & Marker

How can the similarities between childhood and adult hood art be seen? This is my new inquiry question; I felt really uninspired by anything that I had done in the past, I didnt feel anything with my old inquiry question so I decided to change it. I have always been draw to looking at my old work and thinking about how I could change but I have never actually went back in to my art, this is how I came up with my inspiration for this project. When I went back and looked through my old art it was the first time this year that I was compelled to change something, I was inspired by my old work to turn it into something new and different.

I loved the idea that I had created when I was little with the flowers and the table, but it was nothing but a crapy sketch so I decided I wanted to do more with it, make it less of a sketch but keep the childhood flow with it; this is how I came up with the idea to use markers, every kid loves markers! the bold colors and the ease at which they draw, so I decided to keep this idea of kids with markers and move it into my art. I began just adding lines of color to my piece, I tired to make the flowers look a little more like flowers and less like clumps by adding some detail in pencil, then I counties to build up the shapes in the pot. I started to add larger blocks of color next to the zigging lines, I liked the way it looked, I felt like I was in a kindergarten class. I choose to keep the background and table white with little detail because I wanted there to be a focus on the detail within the flowers, the leaves on the stems and the leaves in the middle. I wanted to audience to look first at the flowers and realize that the more they looked the more detailed it got.

In the end I really liked this project, I think that I will have a much easier time coming up with ideas than I did last time because I feel a connection to my work rather than just doing it to get it done. Inspiration is something I really struggled with over this year but I think I have started to get a handle on it with this project. Going forward my plan is to add more detail to the background, but keep it light and color less so the focus remains on the childlike image in the middle but the back becomes more details and the piece receives more layers and time.
