Inclusion Project

Standing under the same tree

This project we had to create an image that encourages inclusion for everyone. So For this project I began by thinking about what disabilities are often outcasts and then began to draw them. I wanted to draw a group of people that are all created by one line. This would connect all the people in more than one way. I chose to do the wheelchair not in the line because I wanted it to be different and something that doesn't connect the people, the idea that the disabilities have no effect on the way people are connected. Then I wanted to do a collage too, so I chose to add a tree in the background. I wanted to do a tree with the idea that everyone stands on the same tree and the same shade. I also chose a tree because of the ideas that the roots hold everyone together and connect the air and the ground just like it connects the people. I also wanted to the tree as a collage because with the idea that all the little pieces fit together to make one whole tree.

I began to make this project by water coloring the background, this is because I wanted some color in the back but I didn't want anything crazy and bright. I thought that the water color would add a nice background that was light but also took up the white space. Once I finished with the background I began on the tree, I started by cutting out small triangles out of old magazines and glued them down. After I had the tree done I began to paint small flowers on the tree showing that things can blossom. Then I began buy drawing the people, I started drawing them on water color paper and then cut them out and glued them onto the other paper. After I had the people done (which I used ink pens to draw) I began to work on the wheel chair I wanted to add more detail to it so that it was different to the people and it wasn't connected to the people. This is because I wanted it to not matter to the connected people.

Once I had everything on the paper I added some final touches and overall like it. I thought that this project was interesting and had a good message. If I were to do this project again I would make it all a collage or make it all on one piece of paper. I also think that if I were to do this project again I would incorporate more elements of design and less elements of just art. Overall I really liked this project and liked how it came out in the end.
