sustained investigation #4

Dog

6x4

Acrylic paint

This project was my fourth sustained investigation. For this I wanted to branch out from horses and do something different so I decided to do a dog. I began this project with the dogs face right in the middle of the page, I thought that the image was too basic so I ended up moving the dogs head to the side of the page, so that not its whole head was on the page. I liked this composition much better so then I began to paint, I wanted to paint it because I wanted to be able to add lots of layers and focus on only using one piece of paper and work on it until I liked it.

I began this project by stretching out what I wanted the image that I wanted to look like, I wanted only half the dog to be on the image so that it was more complex. Once the dog was sketched out I wanted to add the background color before I began to paint the dog. I painted the background a light blue color, I liked this color and thought it would help to slide through to the dog. Once the background was painted I moved onto the working on the dog, I began to just use one color to get the shape of the dog complete. then I went back in and added more color and lots and lots of layer! I kept adding color after color to build a complex image.

Overall I really liked this image, I thought that the layout was cool and I had fun drawing it. I think that I will end up redoing this image because I want to work a little bit more on having the background color bleed through and work to get the shape of the face and ears a little closer to what they should look like. Overall I really like this image I think that I did a good job working with the colors that I had and making layers. think that the dog could use a little bit more color difference on the color scale, like more lights against more darks.
