Lost Childhood Object

For this project I talked to my mom about one of her favorite childhood object. She told me be about her pet duck she had when she was a kid, she recused this baby duck after it had been attacked by a dog. When the baby duck had been grabbed by the neck and dragged a bit before the dog lost interest and left it there, as a little kid my mom found it and wanted to help it. So they brought the duck inside their house and nursed it back to healthy. At the beginning it didn't look like the duck was going to make it, when it would drink water the water would come out the one of the bite holes in the ducks neck. My mom nursed the baby duck back to health but it soon got to be too big and loud for their already animal crowded house so they found a local farm that would take over the care of her duck. The duck had been so fun to be around and great that everyone felt sad when it left, before dropping the now healthy duck off at its new home my mom grabbed some old feathers and some bedding and put it into a box, this box she kept on her night stand and cherished throughout the years. When moving into college the box was lost in the jumble of stuff and never seen again. The box with the memories of her duck where gone. For this project I decided to create this box as her lost childhood memory.

I chose to recreate the small box my mom had filled with the memories of her pet duck, I started this project by planning out the box size I wanted, I wanted it to be small so I decided to do a 3 inch by 2.5 inch long side wall and a 2.5 by 2.5 inch short side wall. I started by cutting all the pieces out of wood, once I had the all cut out I started nailing it together, I ended up cracking some of the wood so I recut the wood and started again. This time I decided to pre-drilled the holes to help prevent cracking, this fixed the problem and I nailed the pieces together to make the box. Once I was done with the box I decided to work on the lid, I wanted to have a lid that was able to be taken on and off but also one that wouldn't slide around so I cut a piece of wood for the cover and then put another smaller piece of wood and used gorilla glue to glue it on top, this made the lid fit snug on. Once I had the box done I moved to decorating it. Originally I wanted to use a wood burner to put detail into the box but I would seem to find it so I used bottle ink and a quills to had some detail to the box. Once the box was done I moved on to the inside, I filled the box will bedding and some seeds.

Overall I really enjoyed this project I thought it was super fun and challenging to work with wood, which is something totally new to me but this project has made me realize that probably being a carpenter or anything like that is out of the picture. This project was a struggle because I hadn't really ever worker with wood before, I think if I were to do this project differently I would have redone the box and wood burned it or painted it inside of using the ink, this is because the ink started to bleed and follow the grain of the wood which was kinda frustrating. I liked the overall idea of this project and it was interesting and fun to talk about lost childhood memories.
