Observational Drawing

For this project we were instructed to pick a still life and draw it. I was at the barn at the time so I went looking around to see if I could find, I ended up picking some apple off the ground outside I originally began my image with using more than one apple, but I ended up spilling water over my image with more than two apples. So I began again with only one apple, I also changed my material when I changed my still life. the first image I used pen which meant that when I spilled water on it it bleed out and turned into a blob. For the second apple drawing I moved to charcoal. I love working with charcoal but this project really wasn't what I was looking for. I struggled with getting the light and everything to look ok during this project.

I began this apple drawing with a pencil and I worked out the image and where I wanted the light spots to be and the dark spots. Then I began to go in with the charcoal pencils and make those places darker or lighter. I really wish that I had had white charcoal because it would have made the apple look even more realistic. Instead I just erased the places that ended up getting to dark. I began by lightly going over the whole image pf the apple to give it some background even were the light spots would be. Then I used a tortillon to go and smooth it all out. After that I began to add the darker and lighter spots to the image, I finished by added the stem and going over the light spots with an eraser to make them pop.

I struggled with this image, I really liked my first one that I had started with the pen and got a little discouraged when it got destroyed so trying to bring my self to make another one was hard. I also didn't really have the materials that I originally wanted to use, I wish that I had white charcoal to make the lights brighter because I think that it makes an image so much stronger when there are colors on both side of the spectrum. I don't like how it looked with just erasing the white spots because everything just seems bland. If I were to do this again I would chose a more interesting object that had more going on and would lead to a better outcome.
