Revision #1

Pig

14x10

Print with acyclic

For this project we were assigned to take an old piece of work and revise it taking a new skill that we learned over the course of this year, I decided to revise my sustained investigation #11, which was a pig that I had created using color pencil and paints. Originally when I started this I wanted to do some printing which is why I picked number 11 in the first place because I felt it would make a good print. I didn't have anything to carve into but had all the other tools so I figured that I would try to cut my image into to paper and then roll over it leaving the cut out spaces of the first paper the dark spaces on the second paper. I began by carving out the image of the pig that I wanted to show through on the next page, then I went to roll over it and as I was going I realized that the paper that I had cut into was way to think to allow the printing ink to go through the cut out space. This meant that after all the cutting I had one inked piece of paper with a pig cut into it and another piece of paper that was untouched.

After that I was pretty discouraged, I should have known that the paper was to thick, so I just flipped the paper around to use up all of the pink ink that I had just put down, again I was hoping that the image would have come out super clear on the other piece of paper; it did not. for a number of reasons 1 being that some of the ink had dried, leaving somewhat of an uneven layer of paint on the paper and 2 being that I had flipped the pink inks pig onto to water color paper. Meaning that the paper wasn't flat which left an un-smooth finish. I decided that I would try again with my original idea but this time cut out the negative space and play it on the paper then ink over it and then pull the paper off. My plan was to do with with multiple layers so that the ears would show up pink, the eyes black, the smaller details blue etc. But this didn't work the first time because when I laid down the paper the backdrop color I didn't let it dry before adding the paper which meant that the paper stuck to the backdrop and didn't come off. So I moved on, this time I decided to use a lighter paper and see if that worked, this didn't work because I let the backdrop dry and then the paper got rolled up when I tried to add the ink.

All this left me with really nothing, so I looked back at my original piece to see if I could pull something from that. I realized I loved the freeness and random color splashes that my original had so I went back to the first thing that I had created, which was actually an accident, the piece that I had dotted off the wet ink from my original cut out pink inking. the more I thought about it I liked the uneven color tones that where there so I decided I would use that. From there I just kinda painted using acrylic to add some color into it. I kind of like how you cant really tell what it is at first but the more you look at it the pig shape comes out. I enjoyed this project even though I struggled with creating it, I think I was in to much of a rush to get to the end that I made careless mistakes that ended up making me spend more time on it, but I did enjoy it. I think my takeaway from him project is that I need to be more focused on my art and also not be so quick to get rid of something just because I don't like the first draft.
