Friends of Cleethorpes Heritage would like to thank Margaret Smethurst for sending us the story of Private Albert Edward Downs, one of the 31 members of the Manchester Regiment, who were killed when the Baptist Church in Cleethorpes was hit by high explosive bombs dropped by a Zeppelin on 1st April 1916.
Margaret tells us that Albert was one of the fifty men from her village who fell during the Great War, She continues,
"I have researched all the names, which has taken me a long time but is something I wanted to do to try to bring the names of the men on the war memorial to light and give them back an identity. I am putting them all in a memorial book for future generations. Thank you so much for allowing me to use your photo, these are the things that make a story real."
