Art, Armour and Angels - 13th April 2013

Post date: Apr 17, 2013 8:1:17 PM

Saturday 13th April 2013 dawned as a bright day and set the tone for our first event of the year. Friends of Cleethorpes Heritage were lucky to host the return of Professor Michelle Brown, who gave us yet more insights into our Lincolnshire heritage and enjoyed herself so much that she declared “Cleethorpes rocks!” at the end of her talk. What a lovely compliment.

A wonderful time was had by all, thanks to Professor Brown’s fascinating talk and slide presentation, which illustrated how people lived and worked in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and included a look at some of the finds from the Staffordshire Hoard. In keeping with FOCH tradition, visitors were also able to enjoy tea and cake served by our very own Mercian Maidens, dressed in Anglo-Saxon garb.

FOCH were thrilled at the fantastic turn-out, which saw us welcome around two hundred visitors to the event, held at the beautiful St Peter’s Church in Cleethorpes. Some of our audience had travelled a great distance to hear Professor Brown’s talk and they were also able to learn more about the Anglo-Saxon period through our display boards and the genuine and replica artefacts on show.

The continuing success of our events demonstrates that there is a real hunger for heritage in North East Lincolnshire, particularly when it is presented in imaginative and innovative ways. Friends of Cleethorpes Heritage would like to thank all those who made this latest event possible, especially all of our wonderful volunteers.

Photographs and videos from the event can now be viewed via this website and also on our Facebook page. Our next event will see us go back in time to the fifteenth century and the War of the Roses, as we bring historical re-enactment society Lord Burgh's Retinue to Cleethorpes. The Memorial Hall will be the venue for what promises to be an exciting event on Saturday 25th May, 11am-4pm.   We look forward to seeing you all there and, as usual, admission is free.
