Wallace was the son of Mr James Allan, the Hylton Road school teacher who founded in 1879 what is now Sunderland A.F.C. He went to sea at the age of 21 and described the sea as his second home.

His wife reported that he had led an exciting career. He was taken prisoner from a deep sea ship and was in Germany for four and a half years. “He never talked about his experiences during that time – I think they were so unpleasant he wanted to forget about them.”

He repeatedly ran the Franco blockade for nearly two years and came through it without a scratch.

The newspapers reported that Wallace had intended to leave the Kildale for some time, not giving up the sea to get a job ashore like his wife had wanted, but to secure another ship in the North-East.

In his last letter home, three days before the attack on the Kildale, he wrote,

“I expect to leave the Kildale at the weekend; have a nice Sunday dinner ready for me.” Sadly, he did indeed leave the Kildale at the weekend, but not to return home.
