Killed whilst member of crew of Wellington mk I C T2470.  www.214squadron.org.uk describes the crash in which Gilbert was killed:

“Took off from Stradishall at 17:50 hours. While approaching base in readiness to land, another Wellington cut across the flight path of T2470, causing Sgt Turner to lose control and the Wellington dived into the ground at 22:15 hours near Denton, 1 mile east of Stradishall airfield, Sussex”.
