Magical History Tour

The passengers on this year's FOCH History Bus trip, which took place on Saturday 22nd August, enjoyed a very full day in Lincoln, beginning with a visit to the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.  Admission to the museum is free and there is plenty to see, including steam engines, tanks, military memorabilia and scenes of war, and exhibits illustrating commercial, domestic, agricultural, industrial and community life.

Our ticket to ride also included a paid behind the scenes tour of the museum's stores, which contain a huge array of items, both large and small, that are not on display to the general public. Thank you to our very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide Horace Liberty for showing us around and answering our many questions.

In the afternoon, we made the short journey to the Collection, where our fantastic guide Paul Gilbert took us through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo Saxon Britain and up to the Civil War, really putting the flesh on the bones of the exhibits.

Then it was on to Lincolnshire's Great Exhibition, which is split between a number of venues, including the Collection and the Usher Gallery. Delights on display included paintings by Stubbs and Turner, the Luttrell Psalter, the Heneage Jewel and Flinders' 1804 map of Terra Australis. Whilst not on the same scale as the Great Exhibition of 1851, it is nevertheless remarkable that so many rare and priceless items with Lincolnshire connections have been brought together in Lincoln.

Lincolnshire's Great Exhibition is open until 27th September and we highly recommend it. For more information, visit the Collection's website

This was a great day out, but it highlighted what we lack in Cleethorpes. Whilst Grimsby at least has the Fishing Heritage Centre and the Time Trap, Cleethorpes has no permanent base at which to celebrate and promote the town's proud heritage. FOCH continues to work to address this issue.Click here to view photos from our trip to Lincoln.
