The Scotherns first arrived in Grimsby in the mid-nineteenth century as the railway and the expansion of the docks transformed the town and its population. In that respect at least they are typical of many a local family.

However, the Scothern family history is far from typical. "Manslaughter, Madness and Mystery" is the remarkable tale of four generations of the Scothern family and the tragedy that dogged them.
