On Feb. 7, 1985, 37-year-old Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena left his office to meet his wife for lunch. That day five men appeared at the agent's side and shoved him into a car. One month later, Camarena's body was found. He had been tortured to death.
In response to his murder, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing red ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing, and the destruction caused by drugs in America.
In 1988, the National Family Partnership sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the red ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. NFP and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver Agent Carmarena's message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Campaign.
1. What can we do as a school to promote a drug free environment?
2. What should you do if you know someone is taking/using drugs and/or alcohol?
Together lets that the pledge to be drug free!! As a class, lets stand up and recite the pledge together:
I pledge to grow up safe, healthy and drug free by:
Understanding the dangers of drug use and abuse.
Respecting myself and being drug free.
Spreading the word to family and friends about the importance of being healthy and drug free.
Once we have recited this together, everyone should receive a red solo club. By signing this cup, you are pledging to not only be drug free yourself, but to help keep our campus drug free!! ASB will be collecting the cups and placing them in the shape of a red ribbon on our fences as a reminder.
After you have signed your pledge cup, check out the site below to see how drugs affect your body in different ways.
