Monday's Message (if you did not see this lesson last week, please proceed with importance of sleep lesson. If you did see this last week, scoll below for another lesson

Importance of Sleep:

  • Up late texting, watching a movie, or checking out the latest post on Snapchat....sound familiar?? For many adolescents, going to bed late is a norm. However, as the research states, sleep is one of the most important parts of your day.
  • As a class or in small groups, discuss these questions
      • How much sleep do you think you get each night?
      • Generally, how easy or hard is it for you to get to sleep? To wake up in the morning?
      • Do you generally feel tired or rested when you wake up in the morning?
      • Are you ever sleepy during the day?
      • Have you ever fallen asleep during a class?
      • Are there certain times of day when you feel especially sleepy? When do you feel the most alert?
      • Are you just as sleepy on weekends or during school vacations as you are during the school week?
  • Watch the video clip here
  • As a class, read the article The Science of Adolescent Sleep
  • Discuss:
    • What are some of the risk factors of teens not getting enough sleep?
    • Do you think schools should have later start times? Why or why not?
    • Discuss what you can do as teens/adolescents to ensure you are getting a good night sleep

If you previously completed the lesson on sleep, then you can do this lesson....

Is Instagram giving teens anxiety and depression?? Or is social media positive for teens??

  • How many hours a day do you spend on your phone? On social media?
  • Do you think it is helping you or hurting you? Let's take a look (watch these two videos)
  • As a class compare and contrast the two points of views. Break into groups....one side defending that social media is positive, and another with the argument that it can lead to anxiety, depression, and other negative effects. Present both sides to class.

Tuesday 12/12

Announcements:

  • Robotics today is canceled. Mr. Nusser is sick. Please ask your teacher to call home if you need to let your parents know.
  • Complete lessons from yesterday if needed
  • Today the 8th graders are at an assembly for articulation to Madison
  • Today you should pull up Power School and look at your grades. You may work on any missing assignments, read a book or organize your binder, back pack or folders. If you have not already thought of what you are doing for Genius Hour, you can use your computer to brainstorm ideas. We will be starting Genius hour after the winter break and everyone will need to have an idea of what to do, make create or innovate.

Here is a great website to explore and get ideas for projects if you do not already have one:

REMEMBER: The cycle of trying, failing and growing creates independent thinkers who are capable and confident

  • You should be working quietly on one of these choices above until lunchtime.

ASB Announcements:

Tomorrow for our fun Friday challenge we will be having a "cross-country ski competition" during lunch. Your ASB rep will come by today during Advisory to collect names of those who would like to participate.

Spread holiday cheer! Today is the last day to buy reindeer grams (during lunch) to be delivered Friday during seventh period.

Announcements-

Mr. Nusser needs to see any students from the robotics team who are planning on going to the Feb 3rd Robotics Competition today during advisory. He must purchase tickets and needs to know who is planning on going. If you are planning on it, or are unsure, please go see Mr. N at the beginning of advisory to talk with him in S4.

Please have students complete the following survey.

Once this is competed, you can play one of the following games (either in groups or as a class)...

Roll-A-Snowman

Use the dice and take turns rolling it within the group (can split into two groups if you’d like). Whatever number your roll lands on, draw the part of the snowman that part of the snowman. The first one to roll all 6 wins.

Roll a 1 → Draw the hat

Roll a 2 → Draw the head

Roll a 3 → Draw a middle body

Roll a 4 →Draw a bottom body

Roll a 5→Draw a face

Roll a 6 → Draw stick arms

You can print, cut and tape this document to make the dice!

Melting Snowman

This is just like hangman, but you will start by drawing a whole snowman on the board. For every incorrect guess part of the snowman is taken away.

In choosing your words and phrases please keep in mind that not all of our students celebrate the same holidays. Try to focus more on winter themes, the new year, or things that are general to this season overall.
