Why do students use language such as “that’s so gay”? What is the impact this kind of hurtful language will have on others?
Think of something you identify as, or is meaningful/important to you... (Hispanic, Asian, short, tall, white, black, smart, rich, poor etc.) what if someone used that as a means to tease someone else? What emotions would that bring up for you- to hear that your identity is used as something negative to make fun of someone for, whether its true or not?
Do you consider this harassment and/or racism?? You should!! Any time we use derogatory terms, no matter who it is towards or whether is it just teasing, it is wrong and hurtful.
(DEROGATORY : expressing a low opinion of someone or something : showing a lack of respect for someone or something.)
How can we prevent the use of language such as “that’s so gay,” used to tease and bully?
