Grade Level - 8th Grade
SOL/Standard - ES.6 The student will investigate and understand that resource use is complex. Key ideas include:
a) global resource use has environmental liabilities and benefits;Â
b) availability, renewal rates, and economic effects are considerations when using resources;Â
c) use of Virginia resources has an effect on the environment and the economy;Â
d) all energy sources have environmental and economic effects
In this experience, students were immersed in real-life, gubernatorial, campaign roles to work collaboratively in creating an energy party platform for the state of Virginia. To best represent the class period’s ideas, one candidate from each class was chosen to represent the platform and participate in the culminating “Energizing Virginia” gubernatorial debate. The debate format mimicked that of a real debate by challenging the candidates to respond authentically, question each other, and apply the knowledge researched by their campaign staff.  Through this lesson, students are learning about how they can be active in the community through voting and the role energy plays in the sustainability of the environment.Â
The energy campaign has taught me many things, from the process of research, campaigning, public speaking, and most of all, the value of hard work. There were many late nights where I wondered why I even did this; ultimately, it is all worth it. This has taught me how to have a proper debate and reflect on real issues. Even if some people might just vote on a person they like, they had the opportunity to act like a real voter. On the other side of the campaign, the voters had a chance to be as if they were real voters. They learned how to make informed decisions and the ability to determine how something will impact their life. Overall, this project was a great learning experience on how voting works and all of the work that goes into them, and they are not all just debates.Â

The collaboration with our ILC was key to 'Energizing Virginia.' Her insights helped us design an engaging campaign simulation, ensuring students actively applied their knowledge through authentic roles and a culminating debate. This partnership truly elevated the project, fostering deeper learning and civic engagement.
