Henrico History
Fifth-grade students had the exciting opportunity to select a science or social studies standard they particularly enjoyed learning about this year. They then created unique projects to showcase their understanding and creativity of that particular SOL strand. Students could either build upon previous projects or embark on entirely new endeavors.Â
We selected three student projects to represent our 5th Grade Innovation Showcase. One group demonstrated their understanding of force and motion by designing a tractor pull device using recyclable materials and a Sphero, illustrating the relationship between mass and force. Another group created an intricate circuit board to exhibit the flow of electricity. The third group utilized Minecraft Education to recreate the important history and future of Pemberton.
These innovative projects were an opportunity for students to expand their durable skills by being critical thinkers, collaborators and communicators with their teammates. The final products were proudly presented at the 5th Grade Innovation Showcase, an event where teachers, administrators, and even 4th graders were invited to get an exclusive preview of the impressive work and learning achievements of our fifth graders.
"I liked that we could choose what topic we wanted to do and how we wanted to present it. I enjoyed collaborating with my classmates to get multiple points of view for the project. My favorite part was learning about Pemberton in the past and then building the school in Minecraft. We got to actually sit outside and create what we saw!"Â
"This coaching collaboration allowed students to be creative and have a choice in how they demonstrated their learning. They were excited and gained a deeper understanding of the science content. My students love working with our ILC and always looked forward to her lessons and projects!"
