3.1 The student will apply creative thinking to artmaking.
3.5 The student will demonstrate skills needed to work collaboratively in an art community.
3.7 The student will determine reasons why art has value to people and communities.
For this project Mr. Spencer’s 3rd grade class sketched, planned, painted and cut the ribbon for a mural in the telehealth room of Glen Lea’s clinic. Students focused on building collaboration skills by sharing supplies, listening to others ideas and compromising to decide on the final design. Students led every step of the mural process. They decided what elements would be painted. The students designed and colored the flyers as well as distributed them to staff. At the ribbon cutting for the mural students read poems and gave speeches about their mural. At the conclusion of the project students got to hear how their art would be valued by the Glen Lea community for years to come.
Making the mural was fun. We got to spend a lot of weeks painting it and I was happy with how the mural turned out with the sun.

I liked painting the mural. It was fun. Me and Neveah did a good job on our poem at the ribbon cutting. Mr. Spencer said he was so proud of us and I liked the Takis too.

The coaching partnership allowed me to dive deeper into the lesson and help solve issues the students would face before they came about. In addition the partnership allowed me to hear different ideas about the project, which led to more creative opportunities for students.
