AP.5: The students will understand the purpose and anatomical features of the integumentary system.
AP.11: The students will understand the purpose and anatomical features of the circulatory system.Â
Students in Anatomy and Physiology participated in a wound lab where students created a specific type of trauma to understand how the body repairs tissue at different layers of skin; maintains healthy amounts of red blood cells; fights infection from microbes; and utilizes structures in the dermis to facilitate healing and maintain homeostasis. The lab also provided great discussion on topics such as ‘why Band-Aids matter’, 'is antibiotic ointment helpful’; and ‘should you pick your scab’. Given time, students could present their wound, identify signature characteristics of their wound, and explain a stage of healing that is connected to two other body systems.
I liked that we got to model the wounds. It was a very good simulation of how to perform care for wounds, and it really helped me to understand the terminology that we used in the rest of the course.
