This project was a student idea, student created, and student owned. We applied the same design process as we would with any other project. Students asked questions on what the paper should look like and what should be included. Students collaborated on how the paper would be distributed (it was decided that a digital paper would reach the community faster so Book Creator is being used) and assigned roles to make it more efficient. When each edition was complete, the digital paper was tested by having all third grade peers in the school read and provide feedback to the writers. This would continue until the students felt comfortable enough to redesign the paper and share it with the principal. The final project would be ready for distribution to the school community. Students are using many durable skills from the HLP and taking on leadership roles they previously may not have done. Students are getting their primary school work completed in a timely way so they can work on the paper on their own time. During the “snow” days off, students were hard at work at home completing their paper. They showed how they could communicate and collaborate anywhere, anytime.
"It means a lot to me because our school never had a paper before. It allows me to work with other people and lets me be creative. I read a book that had a newspaper club so I was inspired to ask to have a newspaper club at my school. This experience has helped me strengthen my skills like working with others, talking in front of others and taking responsibility to keep a deadline for each week."
With the integration of a new reading program, my students and I initially struggled to adjust to creative writing. However, by partnering to blend the program's skills with creative thinking and writing, I've seen the potential to seamlessly combine both. This experience has revealed my students' ability to merge durable skills with writing.
