This learning experience, centered around researching and creating a magazine cover about a famous Black American, offered a rich opportunity for student growth. Students delved into the lives and achievements of their chosen individual, gaining critical content knowledge about history, culture, and social impact. This research phase allowed for the development of the Henrico Learner Profile (HLP) durable skill of critical thinking, as students learned to effectively research, analyze information, and synthesize findings. The subsequent writing of a research paper further reinforced content knowledge and refined this HLP skill through concise writing, evidence-based claims, and proper citation. Creating the magazine cover required students to distill key information into a visually appealing format, developing the HLP of creative thinking and communication by presenting research in a new medium and considering visual communication. Throughout the project, students were encouraged to reflect on their learning process, considering challenges, strategies, strengths, weaknesses, and the evolution of their understanding. This experience naturally fostered essential skills: collaboration through peer interaction, creative thinking in magazine design, critical thinking through source evaluation and analysis, global citizenship by understanding diverse perspectives, communication through writing and presentations, and character development by encouraging perseverance and respect. By integrating these elements, this project became a powerful tool for promoting content knowledge, developing the HLP durable skills, and fostering reflective growth.
“My favorite part about this was writing the essay because we had to research and I like that because we got to find out new information about our person. One thing I learned while doing this project was learning how to make a magazine cover. I used the HLP skill of “Creative Thinking” when I was picking out my outfit for my presentation.”
"This coaching collaboration impacted students in a positive manner because students learned certain features about Canva and how to use Canva to help enhance their learning. They now know that it is another tool that can be used to display their learning."
In class, our ILC came in and showed us how to edit the magazine template that she made and what is part of the graphic design of a magazine page.
For our Black History Month Ceremony, Mr. Green and Ms. Byrd had students dress up like their famous Black History figure and communicate a fact about them. They also displayed their magazine on the Promethean Board.
