Second graders in Ms. Gibson’s class studied innovations and inventors as part of Benchmark Unit 5, "Solving Problems through Technology." After brainstorming a list of problems people have, each student selected a problem and designed a robot to solve that problem. Then they shared their idea with a peer, who gave them constructive feedback. Full of fresh ideas and insights from their collaboration, they sketched out a diagram of their robot with labeled parts. Next, they created a 3-D prototype based on the diagram using Tinkercad and a 3-D printer. Seeing their robot in 3-D helped them revise and improve their designs. Finally, students published a written manual for their robot, with a reflection on what they learned.Â
"The best part was seeing my robot come to life in 3-D!”
"It was fun to be creative and make a real invention like the people we learned about.”
"The ability to design and build in Tinkercad gave a deeper sense of ownership over their projects. The classroom was filled with questions about when they could work on their robots and how they could add more creative features to their designs."
Plan - Diagram of robot
Prepare - Design in Tinkercad
Produce - Deliver a 3-D model
Ponder -Â Deliberate on the process
