Beyond the Trails: A GeoInquiry Adventure in National Parks provided a dynamic learning experience that integrated content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and opportunities for reflection.
Students began by selecting a national park and crafting a geo-inquiry question about a specific issue, such as climate change, wildlife management, or visitor impact. They developed critical content knowledge by researching their park’s geography, ecosystem, and challenges, utilizing data, maps, and credible resources to deepen their understanding of real-world issues. Students also learned and refined professional communication skills and asking thoughtful questions through communicating with National Park rangers via email.
The activity also fostered critical thinking as students analyzed their collected data, identified patterns, and made connections between human activity and environmental outcomes. They evaluated potential solutions, weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each, and presented their conclusions through creative, evidence-based videos.
By combining research, analysis, and reflection, this project helped students develop essential skills for understanding and addressing real-world challenges.
I really enjoyed learning to use Canva to create a video with my partners. We liked that we could express our creativity with a lot of freedom. It was also cool to learn to use an AI tool that helped us to research; it made researching more interesting! This project was a good way to learn new information while also learning to use Canva creatively.
This project challenged students to think critically about environmental and human impacts on National Parks. Through research, they analyzed real data, collaborated in pairs to design visual representations in Canva, and developed communication skills by emailing park rangers with thoughtful questions. These interactions deepened their understanding of conservation efforts and introduced them to a potential career path. By integrating critical thinking, research, collaboration, and professional communication, students gained valuable real-world skills while developing a deeper appreciation for National Parks and the challenges they face.
