5.2 The student will create multimodal presentations that effectively communicate ideas.
5th grade students, either individually or in teams, chose a 4th or 5th grade Science SOL to review and animate using the digital learning tool, Canva. Critical Thinking was used to apply their knowledge of the chosen Science standard and to problem-solve how best to Communicate their concepts and processes through digital multimodal literacies such as oral, visual, animated gestures, and text.
Students also used their Critical Thinking skills when considering their audience of 4th & 5th graders as they applied their science knowledge to create animated presentations to share with teachers and the district-level science coaches to support current review efforts, and offer future science engagement animations.
Students better understand the science concept they created the animation for, as well as developed their skill at using Canva - a digital tool they had little experience with.
I learned about the different rock types and how to edit in Canva. (Tyler)
This experience helped me become more #LifeReady because I had to be very creative and used critical thinking to think about the 4th and 5th grade Science information. My favorite part of the project is the slide that has all of the planets animated with the sun. (Zoey)
The students (and me!) learned a new skill and were so engaged in the process - time flew by each session we collaborated on it.
We’ve been moving through the science curriculum and investigations steadily this year - so this application of their learning with the end goal to engage and support other students’ learning was awesome to see.

The ILC entered each group's chosen curriculum focus into Gemini AI with a prompt to create 3-5 slides with animation and text suggestions for Canva. Students reviewed the suggestions with the ILC to create a plan to move forward.
