AFTER!
The Action Aide student leaders at Fairfield Middle School set to work re-imagining two Library spaces with the goal of creating opportunities for student communication and collaboration. Growing themselves as communicators and collaborators through the process, the students built the 'FMS Studio' and the 'FMS Student Library Exhibition Space' by the end of September!
Using the studio as a base of operations, the Action Aides have hosted teachers and students to the studio to record conversations about the Henrico Learner Profile, Digital Citizenship and even to record live musical events. Our students compile these weekly into a video series we call the 'Fairfield Friday Features.'
In the Library exhibition space, the Action Aides have taken on full responsibility for maintaining and decorating the space, researching elements that would be appropriate for using the space to highlight various Fairfield initiatives and soliciting work from their peers to be displayed.
"The FMS Studio is important because its how where we do our interviews and it has added so much life to Fairfield!"
"Having Action Aides in the library this year has truly transformed the FMS library space. Not only are these students committed to keeping the library tidy and ready for learning, but they have taken up leadership in a student exhibition area creating meaningful displays, interactive contests and student-centered learning opportunities. These students started the year asking us what we wanted them to create and now are taking ownership of certain topics/themes and deciding what they want to educate their peers about.
A few of our students have flourished in this role, growing not only academically but personally coming out of their shells and showing their own strengths. Some of my favorite projects they have worked on this year was the Hispanic Heritage Art Contest, where classmates submitted art that was displayed and then voted on by the whole school and the Friday Features podcast.
