Can you imagine movies with no music? How can our music compositions add excitement and purpose to a film? In this learning experience, our students were challenged with creating an original story, film, and accompanying soundtrack. Students discovered the necessity of music in various forms of media. To begin the experience, they met with VCU Music Composition Professor Filipe Leitao to hear his journey to becoming a composer. Students then learned various techniques for finding their own inspiration and various composition techniques to create their own music. Students worked together in pairs in the library to create a silent stop-motion animation video. In music, students then created their own musical score to accompany their stop-motion video.Using weVideo, students layered their musical scores onto their stop motion video, then they uploaded their final video to their google drive and shared it with their 2nd grade buddy. After sharing, the 2nd graders gave a synopsis of the video, to show understanding, then the video creators led discussions about their video and the importance of sound (they shared their video without sound, then with sound, and talked with their buddy about the different experiences.)
When I was doing this project I learned how to make a stop motion movie and also add my own music to it. It was fun because we got to learn so many new skills. We also got to be creative and show our computer skills, and put them to a good use!

This project has given my students the opportunity to explore key concepts of creativity that impact their daily lives. Through collaboration with their peers, they engaged in filmmaking and music composition, tapping into their creative potential. I was thrilled to partner with VCU Arts to expose students to college-level experiences and career opportunities. It’s powerful for elementary students to see careers in the arts as real, valid paths for their future!
Students learned about the impact of music on story telling from VCU professor Dr. Felipe Leiato.
Using the Stop Motion app during their time in the library to create videos of fairy tales.
Composing original musical scores to accompany their stop motion videos.
Putting it all together in weVideo: using color keying to remove the background and add a different one, then layering on their music.
