Grade Level - 4th
SOL/Standard - Science 4.7 Oceans
Our students had just finished learning about the ocean floor, currents, and ocean food webs. To give them a chance to creatively apply their science knowledge, we decided to let them create their own representations of what they learned using Minecraft Education.
This project offered a rich learning experience by immersing students in ocean science and encouraging them to develop critical content knowledge through exploration and creativity. By selecting specific aspects of oceanography, students engaged deeply with their chosen topics, justifying their choices and explaining their significance. This process enhanced their understanding of the ocean's complex systems and how humans can impact them.
Our 4th grade students focused on developing the lifelong skill of Creative Thinking.
Creative thinking involves generating ideas, learning from challenges, and exploring possibilities. Students created their final products using and Minecraft. They then presented these engaging creations to the class, showcasing their communication skills.
It was fun bringing our ideas together to make something we learned about in science. quote here.
"This coaching collaboration positively impacted students by digging into and reviewing the science content that they are learning in the classrooms, that is often co-taught by Mr. Abinette. It has also helped me as a librarian explore digital tools (Minecraft) that students are interested in, and will be used in my space and future lessons as well, positively impacting students."Â
