Grade Level - Second Grade
SOL/Standard - Science 2.2 The student will investigate and understand that different types of forces may cause an object’s motion to change. Key ideas include
a) forces from direct contact can cause an object to move;
b) some forces, including gravity and magnetism, can cause objects to move from a distance; and
c) forces have applications in our lives.
In “Maze Craze: Forces in Motion Adventure”, students designed and created 3D printed mazes to demonstrate their understanding of Virginia Science SOL 2.2. This project promoted content knowledge and critical thinking by exploring direct contact forces, as well as noncontact forces like magnetism, and gravity. Students connected these concepts to real-life applications to create their mazes, enhancing their understanding. The design process fostered creative thinking as students brainstormed, problem-solved, and used technology to bring their ideas to life. Collaboration and communication were integral, with students working in groups on their mazes, sharing ideas, and presenting their projects. They learned how to design the mazes in tinkercad, a new digital tool to them, which improved their digital literacy. This hands-on, engaging project not only deepened their understanding of forces and motion but also developed essential skills for future learning and problem-solving.
" I liked that I was creative. I feel confident everyone will like my creation."
"I feel like it was fun to spend time on my maze."
"I liked that I worked very hard."
"The activity was challenging but a great way for students to collaborate and and be creative. Students were very motivated by the project, and were excited to share with others. I enjoyed that students were able to experience something that was fun, and that they'll remember for a long time. "
