Students set learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process to improve learning outcomes.
ISTE 1.1b Customized Learning Environments
Students build networks and customize their learning environments in ways that support the learning process.
Students in Ali Jones’ Integrated Services class explored different careers in the Henrico community. They were tasked to research job embedded skills and consumer skills and create instructional materials for the community and their peers. They also planned a CBI for their class to visit the site in order to experience first hand the skills necessary as a consumer of the location and as an employee.Â
Students got to advance their communication skills with peers and with professionals. They also designed community based instruction to engage with other community members. Additionally they collaborated with professionals from the sites chosen to learn more about their job as well as collaborated to organize the field trip for their peers.
“I love how I spoke Spanish and did my work meanwhile my food was yummy and my belated birthday treat was sugary! We set the table by putting out menus and silverware, 1 for every person.” - Sarai Cristobal-Nicolas, 12th Grade
“Chick- Fil- A it was fun and we learned how to count by filling orders and putting the nuggets in the boxes. Then we matched the customers' sauces to their orders.” -Jaymari Young, 11th Grade
“At Publix, we went on a scavenger hunt looking for different items. We planned a healthy and delicious meal for a teacher recovering from surgery. We walked around the produce section looking at fruits and vegetables.” -Thomas Torrence-Wortham, 12th+ Grade
Â
Students practiced math and customer service skills while at Chick Fil-A
Students helped their peers handle money and practice math skills.
Students practiced job embedded skills such as making pizza boxes, and desigining pizzas.  They also practiced math skills such as identifying similar shapes while at Mod Pizza. At the grocery store they had to help a teacher recovering from surgery find healthy groceries and check out and pay for their food.Â
