The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific and engineering practices by planning and carrying out investigations, interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating data, and constructing and critiquing conclusions and explanations.
The student will investigate and understand that organisms, including humans, interact with one another and with the nonliving components in the ecosystem.
Fifth-grade students applied their critical thinking skills to plan and design an investigation centered on ecosystems and the interdependence of species. They created two aquaponics systems and explored the question: what would happen if one system lacked a key part of the ecosystem—the fish? As part of the investigation, students formulated a hypothesis, identified variables and constants, and collected data throughout the process. The project is still ongoing, and we are eager to discover whether the aquaponics system with fish will lead to taller and faster plant growth compared to the system without fish.
“I felt good when we built the fish tank because we got to see the interactions of the shrimp and fish inside the ecosystem. It was cool to think like a scientist. We got to watch the plants grow and investigate our hypothesis.”
-Emmit Ojibway
"Guiding fifth-grade students through an inquiry-based exploration of ecosystems and species interdependence has been an exciting and rewarding experience. Watching their curiosity grow and their critical thinking skills develop throughout the project has been incredibly fulfilling. " - Mrs. Lavell
Students collaborated to measure the plant growth.
Students recorded data and compared the growth of the plants in the aquaponics tank with the fish and shrimp compared to the system without the living organisms.
