On January 30, 2026, students from Greenport School participated in a nationwide protest. They joined peers across the country to demonstrate against deaths occurring during encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling for increased accountability and transparency.
The event was organized by Nic Downing, who actively engaged over 99 students through a group chat and raised awareness on Instagram. The Greenport College Commitment Page* and other social media accounts helped spread the word. Nic was interviewed by The East End Beacon, which featured his insights on the walkout.
He explained to The Quill, “I started by telling people in class, then posted it on social media, and encouraged others to share it in class group chats. We formed a group chat with most of the high school students, planned it, and made it happen. It worked.”
The protest was sparked by a petition circulated among Southold town residents, collecting signatures to present to the town board to ensure community protection against Immigration and Customs Enforcement. About 80 students from various grades participated, marching into town with signs due to the cold weather. This demonstration not only protested against Immigration and Customs Enforcement but also showed solidarity with Minnesota.
Recent civil unrest across the country has highlighted growing concerns about ICE's practices. Many communities have raised issues about the treatment of individuals during enforcement actions, demanding reforms and greater oversight. This unrest reflects a broader national debate about immigration policies and human rights, with protests like Greenport's echoing calls for change and justice.
