As a prospective English Education major, it should come as no surprise that I love to dabble in a good book every once in a while. Personally, I like to stick with the realistic fiction genre. More specifically, thrillers and mysteries are typically what you will find me indulging in. However, finding the right book to read is no easy task with the seemingly endless options. In this new series, I hope to be able to help my fellow bibliophiles find something to read, by sharing some of my personal favorites.
Then She Was Gone by English author Lisa Jewell is my absolute favorite novel, hence why I decided to write about it first. This psychological thriller explores the disappearance of a 15 year old girl named Ellie Mack. The story follows the main protagonist, Ellie’s mother Laurie, who is actively trying to move on with her life. Laurie meets a man in a cafe whose daughter looks very similar to Ellie, which then causes her to actively try to figure out the truth once and for all.
Then She Was Gone is an easy read, meaning that it seems to go by quickly and smoothly. Many of Lisa Jewell’s books are written in a way so that you won’t ever want to put the book down. This fact alone is why she is one of my favorite authors. The story goes through many twists and turns, causing you to second guess yourself every step of the way. I will have to warn you though, the book is extremely disturbing, especially when you get closer to the truth. If you do decide to pick up a copy of Then She Was Gone do not be surprised if you happen to become a bit emotional while reading. In my opinion, this is what makes it such a great read.
