Ms. Mehta
Where did you grow up?
I lived in East Moriches until I was in 3rd grade, when my family moved to West Hampton Beach.
Where did you attend high school?
I went to WHBHS.
Did you have a favorite subject in school?
Depends what year you asked me TBH. When I was in elementary school, I loved my English classes - I loved reading and thought I would be an author when I grew up. As I got into middle school though, I realized I liked the sciences more and that only continued into high school.
When did you know you wanted to be a teacher?
Not until I was in college. I took Education 101 just for fun and because I wanted to learn more about why schools look the way they do, plus I thought it might help me be a better student if I understood education more. During that class, we had to do service learning where I was an in-class tutor and I realized that I wanted to go into education.
What did you enjoy most about college?
WHB is a small town, just like Greenport, and for me I loved college because I just got to meet so many people with so many different stories. In college you really get to choose your friends and create a second family there. I loved that. Though my college Dungeons and Dragons group is definitely a close second.
Have you ever visited Greenport before coming to work here?
Yeah! My dad works at Eastern Long Island hospital, so we used to come every once in a while when I was younger. Purple is my favorite color, so the first time he took us to one of the Porter games was amazing for me. I did not stop talking about the bleachers the whole way home.
Do you have any particular interests outside of your career, such as sports or hobbies?
I am a total nerd. I love The Legend of Zelda series, and am a huge fan of most things Nintendo. As I mentioned, I also play Dungeon and Dragons every Saturday, which is definitely something I look forward to each week. I’m not artistic by any means, but I do like to paint, knit, and a few other things as a way to relax.
What is your hidden talent?
Hmm… the one time I got to use a bow and arrow I hit my target on the first try. I haven’t tried it again though because I don’t want to discover it was beginner’s luck. I need something to brag about.
If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be?
Florence Nightingale. Or Jonas Salk. Both revolutionary people in the world of biology and health care who seem like genuinely kind-hearted souls.
What would you like the students of Greenport to know about you?
I’m also a student - I’m learning all about Greenport and how to keep class fun and help everyone learn. So please give me feedback just like a teacher may give some to you! Also, if I look lost, I may very well be, so help a pal out.
