The Quill interviewed Middle/High School teacher Mrs. Kluber
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Nassau County- specifically Farmingdale.
Where did you attend high school?
I attended Farmingdale High School.
Did you have a favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject was Science- specifically Biology. I was able to take an elective my junior year of high school called, “Sports Medicine”, which spring boarded my love for Anatomy and Physiology.
When did you know you wanted to be a teacher?
I took accelerated classes in high school and always signed up to tutor my peers. I knew I had the ability to become a teacher, but I didn’t decide until later in life that it was the job for me. I have worked as an Athletic Trainer, as well as being a certified teacher.
Having the ability to care for my athletes, teach them about the human body, rehabilitate their injuries, and ensure their athletic successes pushed me to become a teacher as well.
What did you enjoy most about college?
I had the opportunity to play 4 years of Division I lacrosse [at Stony Brook] and I believe it has shaped the woman I am today.
Have you ever visited Greenport before coming to work here?
Yes. The first time I visited Greenport, I had a weekend getaway at the Cliffside. Some of my favorite restaurants are Lucharitos, Claudio’s, and Billy’s on the Bay.
Do you have any particular interests outside of your career, such as sports or hobbies?
Being a former college athlete, I still enjoy going to the gym often. In the fall, I love having my family over every Sunday for “Football Sunday”, because I like to try new recipes.
What is your hidden talent?
I know how to spell my name in American Sign Language, as well as sign the entire alphabet.
If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be?
Alive: I would have dinner with Mia Hamm, she is one of my heroes. She inspired me to be a strong female athlete. I would ask her about her experience at the World Cup and discuss Title IX. Also, I would love to just kick a soccer ball around with her.
Dead: I would have dinner with Harriet Tubman. I have read books and learned about her throughout my time in school, but to sit with her and hear her speak about her journey would be an incredible experience. I am sure there are stories our history books would never be able to explain, and to hear a first hand account would be enlightening.
What made you want to work at Greenport?
The sense of community. The pride displayed by the students, alumni and the community is extraordinary. The North Fork is a force to be reckoned with.
What would you like the students of Greenport to know about you?
A fun fact about me, I played lacrosse not only at the collegiate level but internationally as well. I was an original member of the Italian National Lacrosse team in 2015. Playing sports and being a part of a team my entire life has opened doors that I would have never imagined. I want my students to know that when they step foot into my classroom, I am on your team. I will support you, I will advocate for you, I am here for you. *
