In the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown in March, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called on New Yorkers and Americans across the country to send help in any way they could. One of Greenport’s very own students did just that.
Third grader Manahil Shaheryar sent Governor Cuomo two masks to help during the crisis. Her kindness touched the Governor’s heart so deeply that he sent her a letter back thanking her for her help.
Editor’s Note: The Quill seconds Cuomo in giving Shaheryar a big thanks for her selfless act of kindness when it was needed most in March.
“[The Covid-19 pandemic] has taught me so much, but the vast generosity and kindness of my fellow New Yorkers is what continues to inspire me”, the governor wrote. “Thank you again for this extraordinary gesture, and your support. I am forever grateful.”
Emma Mulhall (‘23) got the chance to sit down with Manahil and ask her a few questions about her experience.
When people started getting sick, what were you feeling?
“Really, really sad, but also mad because having to wear a mask hurts the back of my ears.”
What made you decide to send the masks?
“I was trying to be a good person and tried to help people.”
What was your first reaction when you received the letter from the governor?
“Happy and surprised; I didn’t expect for a letter to be sent back.”
How did your family react?
“My family was very proud of me when they heard.”
If you had the chance to help again, would you do it?
“Definitely.”
