Today marks 24 years since the tragic terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. While none of our students were alive during this horrific event, its impact on our lives and our nation is still profound. This day remains etched in our collective memory as one filled with sorrow and resilience. On September 11, 2001, thousands of Americans lost their lives due to acts of terrorism both in the air and on the ground.
This morning [September 11th], a solemn ceremony took place at approximately 8 a.m. on the front lawn, beginning with the national anthem performed by the Greenport A Cappella group. Following the anthem, Superintendent Beth Doyle and Greenport Mayor Kevin Stuessi delivered heartfelt speeches. Firefighters from East Marion, Orient, and Greenport, along with Southold Police, staff, and students, gathered to honor this important tradition and lined the bus circle.
A large American flag, suspended from two extended ladders, flew above us, symbolizing the patriotic spirit of the day. As the flag was raised to full mast, everyone looked on with reverence before it was lowered to half-mast in remembrance of those lives lost. The ceremony concluded with senior Destin Rallis reading the 42nd President’s address to the American public following the attacks.
