On Friday, September 26, Greenport High School celebrated its Homecoming games with an action-packed day filled with sports, festivities, and school pride. The excitement began with a pep rally, a parade, and finally sports games.
The girls' volleyball match kicked off the events against Mattituck, followed by the girls' soccer team facing Bayport-Blue Point, and finally, the boys' soccer team competing against Center Moriches.
The turnout for the boys' soccer game was particularly impressive, featuring delicious food prepared by local favorite Jimmy Smiley and spirited cheers from the cheerleading team, who kept the energy high throughout the event. While the outcomes of the games may not have been what we had hoped for, each team showcased its hard work and unwavering Porter Pride.
During halftime, elementary students had the opportunity to score a goal against the Porter Pirate, who entertained throughout the game.
Beyond the games, Homecoming included a pep rally and parade. The rally, held during period 9 and advisory, welcomed all varsity athletes, who ran through a tunnel of cheerleaders to greet the Porter Pirate. The Homecoming court was announced, representing students from the ninth to twelfth grades. This year’s court included:
Ninth Grade: Prince Jordan Martines and Princess Addison Johnson
Tenth Grade: Prince Jimbo and Princess Allison Rojas
Eleventh Grade: Prince Eli Javiti and Princess Fiona Wood
Prince and Princess: John Harvey and Lilliana Sanchez Diaz
King and Queen: Jayden Dyer and Faith Welch
During the pep rally, the cheer team performed a spirited routine and the Acapella group sang to add to the festive atmosphere. Even the elementary school students joined in, displaying signs to celebrate the Homecoming court winners.
The Homecoming parade down Front Street was another highlight, featuring the JROTC, cheerleaders, the school band, and the Homecoming court, all escorted in beautifully decorated cars. Firetrucks added to the excitement, delighting the younger spectators along the route.
Overall, this year’s Greenport Homecoming was a resounding success, demonstrating the strong support from the community, even in the wake of the discontinuation of the varsity football team.
Looking ahead, more Homecoming events are on the way! The Homecoming dance is scheduled for October 16th, followed by Porter Day on October 17th. Don’t miss out on the continued celebration of our school spirit!
